CHAPTER 12

Gone Guy

That night, I don’t invite him back to my place and he doesn’t ask and I’m so glad we don’t. It extends that delicious anticipation and also shows him I mean it, that I’m not looking for a ONS. We carry on chatting over the following week and it’s going great. But we can’t meet up again yet, as he has a fifty-fifty arrangement with his ex to have the boys with him four weeknights, while they’re with her Friday to Sunday. Busy life. And when the boys are there, he’s barely online and a couple of times we’ll be messaging then he says he’s signing off for the evening now and he’ll check in again tomorrow, but it’s only 9pm and that seems a bit odd … I mean, I know he wants to spend quality time with his kids, but why the radio silence for the whole night? Then he explains that he has boundaries on his phone to maintain a good work/life balance and tries to switch it off when his kids are around, so they have his full attention. And that seems quite sweet tbh. Makes me feel I might be being too demanding. I was feeling a bit fitted in between his other commitments, but then, that’s life, isn’t it? If I had three sons of nineteen, sixteen and thirteen, I’d have no social life too. We arrange to meet the following weekend. He has a conference the first weekend, so that’s why we can’t meet again straight away. It all sounds plausible enough. Why am I doubting it? I just feel so jaded by the dating world, and the scammers and the liars, I think I’m starting to doubt every single person I meet.

So, to attempt to put my mind at rest, I do my research. He says he works in the medical school at the University of Sheffield and so I have a look and I find his name there, Dr Guy Taylor-Jones, neuroscience. There’s a bio there and it checks out with what he’s told me, about Alzheimer’s being his specialism. But there’s no picture of him. So I check on a few other profiles of staff there and some have pictures and some don’t. So that’s reassuring, but still annoying there’s no picture to check it’s really him. And he’s not on any social media. He told me that already, that he hates Facebook and all that and has never been on it. I Google through the main socials just to check he’s not lying about that, but he isn’t. There’s no sign of him. Frustrating … and is it suspicious? Yes, but is it impossible that someone could have no trace on socials, on a Google search? Not impossible, again just a bit odd.

Opinion is split on this matter into two camps. Michelle and Kelly think it’s fine, that there’s quite a few people around that don’t have much of a digital footprint, Michelle included, who says, apart from putting her quilting ideas on Pinterest, she’s not on any other social media at all.
